Road Trip India Classic Car Touring

Trans Himalayan Motor Expedition

India Classic Car Rally

The phrase, ‘Journey of a Lifetime’, is much quoted but it seldom applies to a journey better than the Trans Himalayan Expedition from Delhi to Srinagar. Quite simply it is probably the greatest journey that you can undertake under your own steam – or at least in one of our 4x4 vehicles.

From start to finish there is breathtaking scenery, rich flavours of India, amazing roads and unique experiences. On two occasions the road climbs to more than 5,000 metres (16,404ft) high and for entire days you can be at 4,000 metres (13,123ft). While the air is thin, the effects of altitude are muted by being in a vehicle and not exerting yourself.

You drive some of the highest motorable passes in the world and look down onto lush or arid plains and mountains in equal measure. Starting in Delhi, your first day at the wheel is very much in the hustle and bustle of daily life. From Nalagarh you start a gently climb in the foothill towards Manali, the starting point for many a journey into the interior. Our journey takes you to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, via Jespa and Tsoker, where you camp out at a permanent encampment. From here you will follow the Indus river, which gave its name to India, to the serene town of Leh, where the heavens reach down to you. After a few days in this tranquil town you travel to Srinagar via Kargil, a stop off point on the journey.

Srinagar, the capital city of Kashmir, is famed as one of the most beautiful places on earth and it doesn’t disappoint. With your accommodation on one of the famed houseboats on Dal Lake, you will be able to relax in the tranquil waters, and explore the Mughal gardens and monuments of this great city. On Dal Lake the retail therapy comes to you in the form of local traders who like to interest you in their wares while you are rowed around the lake in a Shikara.

From Srinagar, our route takes you to Amritsar, the main Holy city for the Sikhs and the site of the Golden Temple – one of the great sights of India. Back on the plains the road leads you to Delhi and the end of an unforgettable journey.
